Both Haarsma and Ham seem to have misunderstood key points in my interpretation of Genesis 1. For example, they miss my view that the animals mentioned in the day 6 passage are three subcategories of land mammals, those most critical for launching human civilization, not all land mammals. Thus, no conflict exists between Genesis 1 and the fact that mammals precede birds in the fossil record. I state, also, that zera‘, ‘ets, and peri are references to life-forms more generic than seed, tree, and fruits. Rather, they point to three non-exhaustive examples of the much broader term deshe’ (vegetation). In this context, the scientific literature supports my claim that continental vegetation preceded the first ocean animals.

Rather than merely “reassert that it [Genesis 1] does match [the established scientific record]” (p. 110), I show how it matches. My book Navigating Genesis explains and documents the alignment in considerable detail.

My quotations from biologists concerning the Cambrian explosion and its challenge to evolutionary models are not all, as Haarsma states, “over twenty-five years old” (p. 111). The most provocative comment dates to 2009. I agree that my quotation from Levinton is “too brief to convey [all] his views.” In my book Improbable Planet I quote Levinton further. He writes, “The assumptions of the models of molecular evolution may influence the outcomes too strongly to allow any significant confidence in estimates of molecular dates for the divergence of the Bilateria.”1 Molecular clock evidence does not overturn the rapidity of the Cambrian explosion.
